Thanks for sharing your experience I-Yana! You must have gone through a ton of complex feelings and thoughts as you considered this life-changing decision. As a WOC, did you feel like you were somehow 'letting down' other WOC or POC? Worked hard, and broke through and into a leadership position in an industry that does not have many POC - and yet you up and walked away (for very valid reasons!). Kudos for prioritizing your personal wellbeing, and taking the steps to ensure that your work not only aligns with your values, but also meets and validates your needs for a supportive and healthy work-life balance.

Aunty P,

Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment & question. Yes, there was a part of me that felt as though I was letting down the WOC not only in my life but WOC overall. Because I had always understood that all that I do and how I conduct myself is not just a reflection of me and who I am but of all those who look like me, who came before me, and who will hopefully come after, so if I walk away then I've somehow ruined the opportunity & access for other WOC. But I have the luxury of having an amazing community of friends (2 of them are the other co-founders of OOO) who remind me all the time that this sort of pressure is unfair and unrealistic to take on all by oneself. And that having the strength & courage to walk away from something that no longer aligns with my foundational values (among other things) is the BEST example of showcasing the importance of knowing, owning & reclaiming your power!

Truly appreciate being able to have this sort of dialogue and that my experience resonated with you <3 ! Thanks again Aunty P :)
